DC Comics New 52 - Stryder's Weekly Top 5

Hey boys and girls!  Got my schedule back on track this week.  Without any ado whatsoever, here's my top 5 New 52 books released on August 7, 2013!

Green Arrow #23 - "Here you go.  You can proceed with your 'rescue' now."

I don't know what's happening to me...I've never liked Green Arrow!  I always thought the premise was silly and the character redundant in a world where Batman and Superman were fighting crime WITHOUT having to use a bow and arrow.  So how is it that Green Arrow is consistently my favourite book of its release week (and maybe even month)?

I blame Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino.  They are KILLING it on this book!

Last issue Oliver had rescued the enigmatic Shado from the clutches of Count Vertigo!  However, the duo still need to escape his country!  Perhaps easier said than done.  On the way, we learn Shado's origin in some really amazingly drawn flashback pages.  Such nice work...

Damn, I also started watching the TV show "Arrow" when I heard that Barry "the Flash" Allen will be in season 2 and 7 episodes in I'm enjoying THAT too.  I don't know what's happening to me...

The rest of my pics are a mystery...but you don't need the World's Greatest Detective...just check after the JUMP!

Detective Comics #23 - "Are you sure about this master Bruce?  It seems rather...extreme."

The cop-killer known as the Wrath is still on the loose in Gotham City and Batman is determined to take him down before he kills again.  The Dark Knight suspects that fellow billionaire E.D. Caldwell is the Wrath, but he needs to find proof...and thus Bruce Wayne and his faithful butler Alfred have arranged a "business meeting" with Caldwell to infiltrate his offices and see what they can find.

We also get the continuing Man-Bat back-up story...with some startling revelations about Man-Bat's wife, Francine Langstrom and HER connection to...you guessed it...E.D. Caldwell!!

Detective Comics keeps getting stronger, both in writing and art, since John Layman and Jason Fabok took over.  I'm really getting into this story, and I enjoyed their earlier "Emperor Penguin" run too!  I  also really like how Fabok draws Batman's utility belt...I like the New 52 bat-suit a lot, except I've always thought the belt looked too ornamental and tiny.  Fabok tweaked the design and draws it looking like it could actually be, you know...practical!  It's the little things...

Earth 2 #15 - "Why are we still alive?"

It's all out WAR as most of the "Wonders" of Earth 2 combine forces with the soldiers of the World Army to face down three new threats...Brutaal, Bedlam and the Beguiler...collectively and very appropraitely named by the Flash as three "Terrors" from Apokolips!  None of the many heroes of Earth 2 seem able to stand against this new threat!

Actually not EVERY wonder is in on that fight...Hawkgirl is in Casablanca trying to figure out who murdered Sam Zhao and what connection they may have to Apokolips while Big Barda and Mr. Miracle are in Gotham City trying to avoid being taken captive by Fury!   Man this book has a lot of characters, including some new ones this issue!  Although I suspect that at least one of these new "Terrors" (coughcough Brutaal) is not really all that new...

In any case, a lot of action this issue but some cool character bits too!  Good work!

Green Lantern #23 - "Someone tell me this fallen Lantern's name.  Now."

Hal Jordan is having a hard time with his new appointment as leader of the Green Lantern Corps.  Especially when they find the body of a new recruit who died in last issue's attack by Larfleeze before anyone even learned his name!  Hal blames himself and thus, when it's discovered that a prisoner named Prixiam Nol-Anj killed her guard and escaped in the confusion of last issues' attack, Hal runs off to apprehend her, ALONE.  Did I mention that the Lantern's rings are also malfunctioning, shutting themselves down randomly and with no immediate cause?  It's a dangerous time to be a Green Lantern....

Despite it being a bad decision, I enjoyed seeing Hal work alone this issue...it's been a rare occurrence since the title began.  There's a reason he's still known as the "Greatest Lantern"!  Fun issue and so far I'm enjoying what I've seen from the (still) new creative team of Robert Venditti and Billy Tan!  Hard to follow up the already-legendary previous run, but the new guys are doing a great job!

Action Comics #23 - "...next time you might want to open with 'we're trying to stop the devourer of life throughout the universe.'"

At the end of last issue, Superman got into a scrap on the Moon with some wacky green-skinned alien calling himself Straith - First Knight of the Pax Galactica!  This issue, The Man of Steel gets to meet his friends (and get into a fight with THEM on the moon, too!).  Of course, this Pax Galactica are actually on Earth's Moon to meet and try to defeat a much greater threat...the world devouring entity known as Lexus!  This looks like a job for....oh, you know....

I loved this comic!  The whole issue is straight-up wacky fun!  I was chuckling to myself all the way through.  Great dialogue and some nice artwork too!  Oh, and I have to assume that there is air on Earth's moon in the DCU considering how much everyone was talking to each other...

Almost forgot we have the conclusion of the "World of Krypton" back-up story, too.  Jor-El and Lara (aka Superman's parents) are still trying to stop a military coup on Krypton...if they can live long enough!

And that's it for the week!  More-or-less.  Honorable mention to Phantom Stranger #11 - a tie-in to the "Trinity War" that sees the Stranger, Batman, Katana and Deadman journey into the afterlife to find the soul of Dr. Light!

Oh also check out Trillium #1, released on the Vertigo label - written and drawn by (my new hero) Jeff Lemire!!  If I didn't restrict myself to New 52 for this article, it'd be my top choice!  Take a look at the cover...

Definitely worth picking up...

New Comic Book Day tomorrow!!!  New issues of Batman, Nightwing, Worlds' Finest, Superboy and more!

Hey this week's Stryder's Dementia keeps up the comic theme as I babble on about BATMAN...found some cool pics, if nothing else...

Have a nice week!  August and everything after...Peace!
