Thursday Threesome: Three Shows I'm Watching Instead of Doing NaNoWriMo Rewrites

Among the excuses I've given for not doing rewrites on my NaNoWriMo project include not feeling so hot, the baby, work, the amount of books I have to read, the amount of books I want to read, depression, anger, pure joy, and the fact that we don't currently own a cat.

The real answer is less exciting: there's just a lot of good television distracting me lately. Yeah, True Detective is ruining my life, but that's not really the full issue. Truly, I've discovered two new shows, and I've had a favorite return, that has essentially changed my viewing landscape in the short term and is distracting me from more useful endeavors. So, well, let's ruin your free time, too.

House of Cards is a top three television show for me all time, and maybe my favorite - we'll see how True Detective turns out first, to be sure. My degree is in history and political science, so a drama that takes place in the political structure of Washington, DC without being a Sorkin fever-dream of how politics should work is always appealing to me.

Netflix dumped the second season on us about two weeks ago. Being a Full Grown Adult, I'm only halfway through the season and I'm really loving it. Some shocking stuff in the first episode, the introduction of a new character, Jackie the majority whip (who should get her own spinoff if there's any justice in the halls of Netflix), the same type of political machinations we came to love in the first season, it's all there and it's glorious. It's been picked up for a third season, which is great, although having to wait a year is...frustrating, at best. Either way, a really solid watch. Both seasons are available on Netflix right now, I believe worldwide.

My wife and I got into Archer sometime last year, and we heard that H. Jon Benjamin was also involved with Bob's Burgers. The show didn't look terribly appealing in the commercials, with the animation and the Fox block of programming, well...

Either way, a friend told me I was wrong and that I should really watch. So I tried to watch one on Netflix and, well, the next thing I knew, I had watched three. And it's just kind of going now. It's pretty brilliant, two of my favorite comedians (Eugene Mirman and Kristen Schall) do voices, and it balances perfectly between weird and sweet. I haven't warmed to Tina the way the rest of the internet has, but I'm sure that will come with time. In the US, at least two seasons exist on Netflix.

I like to picture this gif as two people reacting to there being a good show on SyFy.

Helix is the new show from Ron Moore, who made the last good show on SyFy, Battlestar Galactica. It's sort of like Outbreak, but a little smarter and with some hints of Fringe. In fact, it's exactly what I loved about Fringe without the time travel/alternate universe stuff. It also stars Billy Campbell, who I hadn't heard from since the camptastic The 4400. It's definitely worth your time if you like weird sci-fi thrillers. I'm really, really enjoying it.

And, unlike Almost Human, it's being aired in order!

(No, I'm not bitter.)
