Review: Marvel Minimates Deadpools Assemble Convention Exclusive!

One of the rare treasures that Jacinta brought me back from her recent jaunt to STGCC (Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention) was this exclusive set of Marvel Minimates, previously available at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Entitled Deadpools Assemble it’s a collection of fourth-wall-breaking, fan-favourite, mercenary Deadpool pretending to be some of Marvel’s heavy hitters. (And Cable).

As Marvel’s wackiest, most irreverent character, Deadpool is easy to write terribly and difficult to execute well. But even when I’m repelled by the material itself, there’s been some pretty solid premises - and I can’t help but but endeared by at least the concept of the character (plus it’s Rob Liefeld’s one great design!). (Okay, he may have been trying to draw Spider-Man at the time). Regardless, everybody loves Deadpool to some degree so why not celebrate him in this bizarre way...

Now I might not get all the references but I can provide you with a comprehensive visual guide and tell you what I enjoyed about this set... after the jump!'

Perth Supanova 2013 - Day 1 Teaser: The Hoff! Urban! Cosplay!

STOP!

Supanova has finally exploded all over Perth's Claremont Showgrounds and we are deeply embedded in the pop culture trenches! We braved scratches from foam weapons and giant wings to bring you the best local coverage possible, a lot of which we will roll out over the following days as we are all super listless and yawny now.

But we do have a bunch of photos to get things rolling and give you a taste of what went down on the first day. Including that crazy picture above of Kroton, the obscure Cyberman from the comics who retained his emotions and probably even cried or something! Did you know that under all that armour is our very own Courtney Coulson, frequent guest host of The Book Was Better and writer of Costume Critiques?! That is just one example of the great lengths our team will go to in order to assimiliate.

Much more... maybe even a photo of you... after the jump!

Gallery: Free Comic Book Day 2013 at Quality Comics!

Holy crap, you guys, it's Free Comic Book Day 2013 and, as promised, a lot of things are going on. Perth, Western Australia may be the most isolated capital city in the world, but that doesn't mean that Batman won't show up if he gets the call. Yes. We are now friends with Batman.

(You may also recognise Black Widow as our friend Courtney who joined me recently on The Book Was Better podcast). And there were plenty of other characters out in force to celebrate with our other friends at Quality Comics. Short version: Everyone is our friend.

If you'd like to see a lot more pictures of the awesomeness celebrating sequential art today then please join me... after the jump!

Deadpool Got Game!

Deadpool, as a character, is such a mixed bag for me. From his humble beginnings of Rob Leifeld trying to draw Spider-Man, to his latter incarnations as the crazy, cancer-ridden, fourth-wall-breaking merc with a mouth, he's often the victim of writers who aren't particularly funny desperately trying to be funny and not always succeeding. At worst he's the poster boy for cloying fan-service, but there's still something undeniably alluring and enjoyable about him that keeps even the hardest cynic curious about his adventures.

Well now he has his own upcoming video game and as deliberately obnoxious as the following trailer is, I can't help cracking a smile. This sure will be... something!

What do you think of this silliness?
