The Book Was Better Podcast Episode 44: Ghostbusters II (with guest host Courtney Coulson!)
The Book Was Better is the (now weekly) podcast where we decimate the often terrible and hastily written book of the film!
Who you gonna call? Young pop culture aficionado (and fellow Fruitless Pursuits contributor) Courtney Coulson, that's who! My guest host strapped on the ol' proton pack and we snared Ed Naha's spooky novelization of the not-so-popular Ghostbusters II! I hear it likes the girls!
You can download it from the official site, or why not subscribe to us on iTunes?
And here's Courtney in her costume! You can see more of this in our video teaser.

Gallery: Free Comic Book Day 2013 at Quality Comics!
Holy crap, you guys, it's Free Comic Book Day 2013 and, as promised, a lot of things are going on. Perth, Western Australia may be the most isolated capital city in the world, but that doesn't mean that Batman won't show up if he gets the call. Yes. We are now friends with Batman.
(You may also recognise Black Widow as our friend Courtney who joined me recently on The Book Was Better podcast). And there were plenty of other characters out in force to celebrate with our other friends at Quality Comics. Short version: Everyone is our friend.
If you'd like to see a lot more pictures of the awesomeness celebrating sequential art today then please join me... after the jump!

Thursday Threesome: The Top Three Irrational Pop Culture Fears of my Childhood!
Thursday Threesome is the weekly opportunity for one of the fine Fruitless Pursuits contributors to share and discuss a set of three... well, just about anything! I’m going to use my turn by delighting you with... The Top Three Irrational Pop Culture Fears of my Childhood!
Now let’s be perfectly honest. I was kind of a pussy kid, afraid of my own shadow, burdened by an overactive imagination and - if the following stories are any indication - most probably suffering from some degree of undiagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder. I had plenty of little rituals to keep me “safe” that nobody really ever knew about. My recent trip back to my hometown has convinced me that this all stemmed from spending those formative years without a father and in a small and relatively isolated city. I think I felt vulnerable. But let’s not analyse me, let’s find out why Yoda is terrifying.
That story and more... after the jump!

A few weeks back we featured The Art of Wayne Dorrington; a showcase of Wayne's variety of pop culture influenced art in varying styles and mediums (illustration, papercraft, iconoscope and more).
Now, Wayne is back with another superb movie poster... this time tackling the fan favorite Ghostbusters.
And if we've got you in the ghost busting mood, click through the jump for a whole lot of Ghostbusters (and Real Ghostbusters) fan art. It ranges from amazing to cute to just plain weird.

Hockey Geekery
All of us here at Fruitless Pursuits love geeking out over nerdy stuff, but some of us also love geeking out over the traditionally less nerdy area of sports. A guy who shares our geek sports love is Dave from Dave's Geeky Hockey. What started as a few 'Hey wouldn't this be cool...' ideas has escalated into teaming up with custom jersey company Rinkgear to get some of these designs off the computer screen and onto the backs of fans. I myself have this bad boy on the way, and fittingly it should arrive just in time for ACTUAL winter:
Jump below the cut for a look at a few more of Dave's kickass designs.

Tumblr Rulz: Pixel Art by Sixteen Bits
I found Sixteen Bits while gathering art for my previous article The Art of Wrestling. And what find it was.
Sixteen Bits has been creating pixel art of.. well, basically every character ever created. His style reminds me of the face-forward background characters (NPC's) in an old school RPG. Somehow he was able to capture each characters unique facial expressions using just a few varying pixels.

I Bought Dan Ackroyd's Vodka in a Crystal Skull!
Did you know that when Dan Ackroyd's not out busting ghosts, he is actually making some of the world's best vodka? And I'm not talking about wearing overalls and no shirt and making a batch in the bath. Oh no, I am talking about vodka that is distilled four times and then triple filtered through DIAMONDS. It has not just won a gold medal, but a DOUBLE-GOLD medal. At the Vodka Olympic Games!
Oh, and buy the way... did I mention that the bottle is a GODDAMNED CRYSTAL SKULL?!
Oh, and buy the way... did I mention that the bottle is a GODDAMNED CRYSTAL SKULL?!
Now, I haven't drank much alcohol at all in the last year or so, but I'm a big fan of Dan Ackroyd, I'm one of the few fans of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I wanted to pay back Dan for keeping paranormal activity in the New York area to an all-time low. Seriously, you guys, I needed to buy some of this crazy expensive supernatural skull vodka. So that's exactly what I did!
Join me after the jump for more photographs as I unbox my bottle of Crystal Head!

Alternative Comixology: Recommendations Beyond the New 52.
It's true that it took the DC Universe's colossal, sassy reboot to get me using Comixology and legitimately purchasing and downloading new books directly onto my ipad. But there's only so much self-aware Aquaman, Catwoman cleavage, and bad Bat-Dads a man can take, so I started to poke around the Comixology app to find some alternative books that might be a little better suited to my tastes.
I lean suggestively towards indie, awkward and quirky, and thanks to some recent sales I got to try out a virtual bounty of brand new (to me) and eclectic comics that I perhaps wouldn't have otherwise discovered...
If you want to stretch yourself beyond the Big Two, then why not join me after the jump and we can be hipster elitest jerks. Together. <3

Most Memorable Presents: Bustin' Makes Me Feel Good.
As a child I was all about the toys (not a huge amount has changed) and clothing or music seemed like pretty crappy Christmas presents. All that changed, however, in 1984 when, on Christmas Day, I was gifted the two following memorable items:
And yes! That is the Ghostbusters soundtrack on classic cassette! A luxury convenience in a world where, if you wanted to hear a specific song, you would have to listen to the radio all day and hope for the best. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first cassette I owned.
Back then, the whole planet was gripped by Ghostbusters fever, and maybe it was the fact that they had not made any toys at this stage that made the few available items of merchandise so desirable. Owning a Ghostbusters logo T-shirt was a rite of passage in 1984 and it would be hard-pressed to find any teenager or child alive at that time that didn't have one. It was just like how every single person in the world was required to own a Batman symbol T-shirt in 1989.
At tender age of eight Ghostbusters still kind of scared the crap out of me, but rest assured I still wore that shirt with pride. It was one of my four favourite childhood items of clothing, alongside a silver vinyl jacket, a white sweatshirt with Garfield on it, and a black sweatshirt covered in puffy neon space invaders. The eighties were a stylish time.

Most Memorable Presents: VHS MEGA-HAUL!
In the very early 1990's my Grandmother bought myself and my two brothers a TON of VHS tapes for Christmas. At the time, some of these movies weren't that easy to come across, but my Grandmother worked at the Pennsauken Mart... which was almost like an indoor flea market made up of full-time shops. Kind of like the dirt mall in Mallrats.
The Mart was the best. You could get pizza, soft pretzels, swords, guitars, belt buckles, action figures, magazines, lottery tickets, airbrushed artwork, lingerie, toy robots and pretty much everything else that is awesome. There was also a huge video store that had very movie ever (and then more movies).
My Grandmother tripled our whole VHS collection on that Christmas day. It's safe to say that this gift defined most of my youth.

Bill Murray Themed Art Show Opening TONIGHT!
Did you know that the latest from LA's awesome Gallery 1988 is Please Post Bills, an art tribute to beautiful, embitter, pock-marked comedy legend, the irrepressible Mr. Bill Murray? Star of Garfield and Garfield's Still Fat?
I kid, of course, because I have nothing but respect for Mr. Murray, and my favourite films of all time include: Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation, and I love Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Life Aquatic, Groundhog Day, Zombieland, Stripes, and holy shit, even Meatballs. Bill makes everything better. And no other actor is as deserving of such a show.
If you can't get there in person (like me on the other side of the world!) then you can get more info here. Or join me after the jump to view another couple of favourites!

Amazing Custom Lego Minifigures on Flickr
Every few months, I end up on flickr browsing custom Lego minifigures. And each time I am amazed by the possibilities that people have came up with. If you search you'll find custom characters from almost every popular Film/TV/Comic/etc franchise. Some figures are made up of existing Lego parts, and others have custom molded accessories, stickers, or even hand painted pieces. It's all very awesome and inspiring.
Here's a batch of the goodies. Lego, if you're reading... take note.
