Support the Most Virile Animation Ever: The Manly Show!

Remember our good friend and former contributor, Tim Merks? The reason he has been posting for us is that he's been working his arse off with fellow artists Christien Clegg and Adrian Tolman on some of the most testosteron fuelled artwork and animation ever The Manly Show. You can check out the very entertaining tumblr here but now they have even bigger, sweatier, musclier fish to fry.

Tim and friends need your help to support their campaign to produce three manly animated shorts. This is an extremely talented team who create some of the most kinetic and inventive animation you will see, so if you're at all in doubt please take a look at this brilliant teaser for their campaign.

Their fundraising is in its final week and there's still a bit of a way to go, so if you can through them a big manly bone, check out their Pozible campaign here. We miss you, Tim!

Star Wars Day: Boba Flex

Here's my animated contribution to Star Wars day. A ripped Boba Fett or as I like to call him Boba Flex!

I loved my Fett toy when I was a kid and it's the only Star Wars toy I ever bought. I even used it for reference when I was drawing this.

Oh and this is also slightly related to a little side project I'm working on with a friend but I don't know if you are ready to handle that yet

Loop de loop

There's this great little monthly competition for any of you animators (pro, student or dabblers) called the Loopdeloop

"LoopdeLoop is an animation challenge. Each month, animators from around the world create looping animations based on a given topic and upload them to www.loopdeloop.org. On the last Tuesday of the month all of the posted loops are compiled and screened to a live audience at Loop in Melbourne, Australia. During the screening a winner is declared, who enters the hall of fame and has their loop featured throughout the following month"

You don't need to be from Melbourne to participate (I'm from Perth). You just submit your loops via the website and (once they are approved) they are added to the site with a 5 star voting system. So when your loop is up you spam and blackmail all your friends to give you a 5 star ratings :P

The topic is just your springboard to get you going and you can be pretty loose and just follow your heart. For example for the theme "mask" I drew manly shirtless guys doing squats at the beach and eating bacon

This is a good explanation as to why it's fun to enter:

"Our goal is to connect people working in independent animation and ease the feelings of isolation that can come with the notoriously long hours involved in the creation of their work. Rather than short films which can quickly balloon into daunting, all encompassing projects, we’ve opted to be a monthly showcase of animated loops.

The idea behind this is to make creating work for the project more achievable and fun, much less intimidating than having to plan and execute a full animated narrative"

I can vouch for that. I spent 5 years working on my own short film and I've spent a lot of time working on other peoples tv shows and it is easy to lose the love for animation. Doing these loops brings the fun back into animation. It does remind me of the weekends with my friends, a super 8 camera and either lego or plasticine and how we would animate until we either ran out of film or the sun would go down. Good times

I have a few more of my loops after the jump or you can just jump over to the Loopdeloop website and see for yourself the insanity and fun that this competition has created. This months theme that closes on Sunday the 27th of November is "Condoms" which is to link in with the World AIDS day. It will be an interesting month I think haha

Olive the Rabbit

So I'm going to talk about my talented partner in crime a bit here. Her name is Roseline Lau and we've worked together as animators all across Australia. We mostly animated in Adobe flash (grrr) and working in that for 5 years and the productions we were on limiting/restricting how much drawing we could do (the time it took to draw 'on model' usually means we just use what we have even if it looks lousy) meant we both hit a breaking point. Rose pretty much swore she would never animate again.

While I'm still struggling trying to find the love and do more interesting creatively challenging animated projects, Rose has gone ahead and setup her own business 'Olive the Rabbit' Pet portraitures of your animal friends

Batman vs youtube

I was chillin' out on an island but now I'm back with some Batman videos for the last few days of Batman week.

This is probably my most favourite Batman youtube video. I love the bomb scene!

It doesn't end there

Cop Rock

Rocktoooobahhhh isn't over yet so are you ready for some Cop Rock?

I know right?

You thought you were ready but you weren't. This is how Wikipedia explains it:

"Cop Rock is an American musical police drama series that aired on ABC in 1990. The show, a police drama presented as a musical, was co-created by Steven Bochco, who also served as executive producer. TV Guide ranked it #8 on TV Guide's List of the 50 Worst TV Shows of All Time list in 2002."

I've thrown down some more gems that are truly outrageous after the jumpy
