Origins 2013 Convention Recap!

This past weekend was Origins 2013, the medium sized festival of tabletop games in Columbus, Ohio. At around 10,000 guests over 4 days (mostly repeats, I would assume), it's definitely larger than your standard local gaming convention, and at the same time it's no Gen Con. But Origins holds a special place in my heart as a game designer and gamer, and I believe that feeling is shared across the board. Being mid-sized, it's the convention that everyone will travel to, but not so insane that you can't actually spend time with those people. It's more of a "play" convention for me than a "work" convention.

This year I attended for 2 full days and played a handful of games, observed a bunch of others, saw some nice prototypes, and met some old and new friends.

Chris Zinsli (Cardboard Edison) & Patrick Nickell (Crash Games) play the Shakespearean microgame, Council of Verona.

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode 10: Mhysa!

Okay so everyone can unclench for the rest of the year. Blood-and-boobs fantasy epic Game of Thrones season three has finally ended. Let your throner boners deflate, and look forward to a nightmare-free slumber again.

You may commence with the heavy touching.
I never read those big, fancy word-books, but I attentively watched each episode and I've been recapping the crap out of them for your enlightenment/pleasure. So join me one more time (this year) as I recap the crap out of Mhysa... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones! Episode 9: The Rains of Castamere!

Holy crap, Game of Thrones! Holy crap! What the holy living crap in the hell was that? Holy. Craaaap!

As a dullard who hasn’t read the epic tomes that this blood-and-boobs fantasy epic is based on, I wasn’t quite prepared for that. If you want to hear this ignoramus’ reaction, join me as I recap the (holy) crap out of the traumatic and disturbing The Rains of Castamere... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones! Episode 8: Second Sons!

It’s episode 8 of blood-and-boobs fantasy epic, Game of Thrones, and they finally figure out the formula for making a consistently solid and engaging episode! Ditch the deadweight Starks, Robb and Bran (and by association that bastard Jon Snow) and focus on the undeniable badassery of Daenerys and the Lannisters. Not to mention some truly stellar performances. More like Peter DRINKlage, AM I RITE U GUYZ?!

Meet the Second Sons! Chief, Rapey and Spunky.
I may not have read your fancy books, but I sure can watch a screen like a pro. So if you can tolerate my unabashed ignorance, join me as I recap the crap out of Second Sons... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones! Episode Seven: The Bear and the Maiden Fair.

Ok, so this is one of those slower, filler episodes where OMG! WHAT IS HAPPENING! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?! Oh, Game of Thrones, even when you start slow, you’ve always got something insane stored up for the end!

Lots to talk about this week, not the least of which is Brienne versus an unexpected adversary, and Theon learns that keeping your Throner boner strong isn’t always the best idea. If you’re not too well-read and fancy to enjoy the ill-informed ramblings of an enthusiast who belligerently hasn’t read the books, then I’ll recap the crap out of this episode... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode 6: The Climb!

After battering our eyeballs with constant action for the last couple of weeks, blood-and-boobs fantasy epic Game of Thrones slows down the pace a little this week. That’s OK, Game of Thrones! You’ve earned it! Put your feet up and relax a bit as we enjoy The Climb. (Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that this will be both a literal AND metaphorical climb? I’m onto your games, Thrones!).

To find out what this ill-informed, didn’t-read-the-books, ruffian thinks, join me as I recap the crap out of it... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode Five: Kissed by Fire!

We’ve only just hit the halfway point and already Game of Thrones season three is packing plenty of punches. And those epic punches are covered in fire! And laced with nipples! I just got punched square in the face by episode five, Kissed by Fire, and I may not have read those big fancy books, but boy do I have an awful lot of knee-jerk, immature, and ill-educated things to say about it!

Let’s recap the crap out of Game of Thrones! If your Throner Boner remains strong then join me... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode Four: And Now His Watch is Ended!

Everyone's favourite family blood-and-boobs fantasy epic Game of Thrones is picking up momentum as some characters - who have long been traipsing around doing nothing - finally get to unleash their beasts. Growing tired of the talky-talk and long for some tearing shit up? Episode Four: And Now His Watch Has Ended is unlikely to disappoint!

These shields commemorate the lost nipples of Astapor.
Now I haven't ready any of those fancy word-books, but if you want the belligerent opinion of the common man on the street then I will recap the crap out of it... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode Three: Walk of Punishment!

Holy crap, Game of Thrones! Swinging wildly between humour and sheer unadulterated horror, Episode Three, Walk of Punishment, seemed determined to both delight and disturb. And it’s not just the slaves of Astapor that will be grotesquely punished before the credits roll...

If you want the uneducated opinion of a white-knuckled, squeamish layman who hasn’t yet read the books, then I will recap the crap out of all this buttock-clenching blood-and-boobs madness... after the jump!

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode Two: Dark Wings, Dark Words!

After last week’s light and languid series return, this week’s Game of Thrones plays catch up with all the characters we missed. Yes, with approximately a thousand main characters - and new ones arriving all the time - it now takes this blood-and-boobs fantasy epic two solid hours just to give us a glimpse of everyone we know. It also requires a guide book to follow. That’s where I step in. I may not have read the books, or remember all the names, but by god am I going to recap the shit out of this episode for the good of the common woman/man.

If you want me to sketchily explain it to you... join me after the jump!

PAX East 2013: Cards Against Humanity Is Bigger Than Monopoly.

I'm not sure when it happened, but sometime over the past few months Cards Against Humanity became the biggest game in the world. Maybe not the world, but definitely MY world. At PAX East you couldn't walk down a hallway without passing a group playing the game. You couldn't come close to getting into their sold out panel (which concluded with free milk and cookies for everyone). And you could barely get your hands on all three of the exclusive promo packs that were being given away. League of Legends ruled the video game side of the show, but Cards Against Humanity was the king of the tabletop side.

The 3rd Expansion was announced and released at PAX and I managed to get a copy. And after trading away a bunch of goodies, I was able to get all 3 PAX promo packs.

Click through the jump for a spoiler of all of the nerdtastic PAX cards, which are bringing top dollar on eBay right now. It's going to be hard to be a completist with this game.

F**k Yeah Game of Thrones Recaps! Episode One: Valar Dohaeris!

Just about everybody I know has had a total Thrones-boner for the start of Game of Thrones series three and, now that it has finally aired, we can all relax, reflect, and let the blood pump back into our heads. I wouldn’t say that the series has started with bang, but perhaps with a gentle bump against our leg with the veiled promise of a bang later on. It’s okay to start off slow. We need the setup. You can’t make an omelette without staring for an hour at a carton of eggs.

Writer/beard-farmer George R. R. Martin’s work is filled with all sorts of fancy names and places so, just in case you’re confused, I’m going to break down everything that happened for the common layman. I haven’t read the books, but I have plenty of opinions on things and enjoy the sound of my own voice.

Why don’t you share Episode One: Valar Dohaeris with me... after the jump!

TotalCon 27 Recap!

This past weekend was TotalCon, an old school game convention in Mansfield, MA. By old school, I don't mean retro games or anything like that, instead TotalCon has the feeling of old friends, meeting up  year after year to play board games. This was my first year at the con, but the 27th for everyone else. Everyone was very welcoming while inviting me into their traditional tournaments and routines. This could be the high school reunion of board game conventions, but way more fun and way less awkward.

I arrived after midnight on Friday and had a little over 24 hours to squeeze in as many games as possible. Click through the jump for the full recap.

Unpub 3 (Unpublished Games Festival) Mega Recap!

Last year, we kicked off the board game convention (pre)season by heading down to Delaware for the intimate, yet innovative Unpub 2. This past weekend was the 3rd year for the Unpub program and it was bigger, longer and better than ever.

With two days and 65 unpublished board games, there was a lot of ground to cover. I was also running up to 15 sessions of my own games so it was tricky. In the end, I only played about 8 other games (mostly quick ones) but still had a blast.

Metatopia: The Game Design Festival Mega Recap!

A week ago, I traveled into storm-battered North Jersey to attend Metatopia, the Game Design Festival. Traveling up there could be a story of its own, but in short... it felt like a war zone. 80 miles of no power, no traffic lights, 1/2 mile lines for gas, downed trees and downed power lines. Even my original hotel had no power.

But behind the walls of the Morristown Hyatt, you wouldn't even realize the destruction outside. The attendance was decent, and the mood was very upbeat. It may sound strange, but this isn't your normal convention.

Metatopia is almost like a reverse convention. Instead of having a ton of people wandering around looking at displays and booths, the designers have a table (or sometimes a room) and attendees sign up to play their games. If a game allows for 4 players, there is a sign up sheet with 4 slots. And then at the set time, that game starts. No real wandering or browsing, just focused, mostly-planned game events.

The second part of Metatopia is the massive assortment of panels. Designers, publishers, artists, industry insiders and more were presenting panels on everything you could think of.

-Should You Self-Publish?
-Women in Gaming - Shaping the Future
-Stealing Ideas From Other Games
-Using Adobe Software
-How Not To Be A Jerk

I was there on behalf of The Game Crafter, a print-on-demand board and card game manufacturer, and an extremely useful tool for most of the attendees of Metatopia. I played a bunch of games, ran a few panels, and attended a few others. Click through the jump for my full recap.

Unpub Protozone At Congress Of Gamers - Recap

Congress of Gamers is a small(ish) gathering of board gamers in Rockville, MD, just outside of Washington DC. It's just under 3 hours from my house, so I took the long solo drive down to see what it was all about. I really had no clue going into it because 1) Like I said, it's small(ish), 2) It's only been around for a few years, and 3) Their website is a little rough. Just finding out the location requires the user to channel their inner internet detective.

Even walking up to it, I still had no clue what to expect. The event was in a Senior Center, which sounds like it'll be a one or two room building, but this was bigger than most high schools. Tons of themed rooms, with tones of things to do. It made me want to skip 30 years into the future just to have the possibility of hanging out at one of these places.

But I was there to play games. The main room had a whole bunch of people playing Power Grid at once, with a silent Board Game Auction happening along side of it. Instead, I spent my time in the Unpub Protozone, a room for established, and up-and-coming designers to demo their new and unpublished games. The mood was very upbeat and creative in there, with a lot of great minds huddled around each game. I only played a few, and photographed a few more, but overall had a great time.

Gen Con 2012 Recap Part Three (With SMASH UP!)

Part One covered FridayPart Two covered Saturday and Sunday. So what is left to talk about?

GEN CON MONDAY!

You may be wondering what Gen Con Monday is all about. It's the day where your flight is canceled and you are stuck in Indianapolis for an additional 24 hours. Luckily, I was stuck there with designer Jay Treat who A) was great company, and B) had a few games on hand.

Click through the jump for a look into our extended Gen Con and all of the games we were able to play. Not a ton of personal photos this time around.... sorry!

America's Got Talent Finals: The Last Chance!

It's the very last chance for the top America's Got Talent finalists to prove themselves as the top act in the country. Six acts, and only one will be crowned the winner. It's been a long journey to this point, so let's jump right into it.

Instead of just choosing my number one, I've added videos and thoughts on all of them. I'm going to say that Tom Cotter and William Close are going to be the top two and I think William Close will get it, even though I want to see it go to Tom Cotter. And here are all 6 performances so you can decide for yourself.

America's Got Talent Semi Final Recap: Unexpected Awesomeness

America's Got Talent is moving forward with the last episode of the Semi-Finals. This was probably the best episode yet as far as the performances go, and it's going to be REALLY tough to see some of these acts go. Some of my favorites didn't do exactly what I'd hoped, and some that I didn't like before blew me away.

For mr, it all came down to the performances. A few were less than expected and some were absolutely outstanding. Click through the jump for my top 3.

Gen Con Recap Part 2 (with MARS NEEDS MECHANICS!)

Continued from Gen Con Recap Part One

After a full day of gaming and meeting people, it was time to get to work! On Saturday I scheduled 8 hours of game sessions at 3 different locations and my play time was limited... but I managed to squeeze in some fun.

Not as much fun as this guy though.

Click through the jump for more Gen Con madness, including Mars Needs Mechanics, The Game Crafter, and a super secret prototype from Tasty Minstrel Games.
