Friday Night Movie Reviews: March

And we are BACK for 2014! Sure, it's not actually Friday, but Friday is just a state of mind though, right? And we're only a time machine away from a Friday at any given point, so it's totally fine. Now that I've justified my lateness, let's get on to the movies shall we?

Once again we have an eclectic mix of movie reviews coming to you from Luke, Jeff and Jacinta. Join us below the cut to see what we've been watching this month.

Thursday Threesome: Best Character Adaptations!

Book adaptations into television shows or movies are a given, but often the adaptation doesn’t quite do the source material justice. Under the cut I talk about my favourite three recent adaptations of book characters for television and film and why I think they do their source material and their on-screen roles justice.

The Dresden Readthrough: Dead Beat

We continue our readthrough of Jim Butcher's uber-popular urban fantasy series The Dresden Files today with book seven, Dead Beat. The continuing plan is to do a book a month on the first Tuesday of each month, and with 15 books on the publication schedule between now and when our readthrough is over, and perhaps our timing being good enough for the 16th, our reading list should be pretty full for the foreseeable future.

After being somewhat underwhelmed with book six, I'm extremely happy that book seven not only got us back on track, but is now probably my favorite of the series. How does this keep getting better?

The Book Was Better Podcast Episode 77: Red Heat! (with Jessica McLeod!)

This week original host Jessica McLeod makes a triumphant return visit as we try to wrap our pretty heads around the America vs Russia/Belushi vs Schwarzenegger madness that is the novelization of Cold War buddy cop classic Red Heat! Did any of that make sense? This book and movie doesn't make any damn sense. But Jessica is back so let's break out our worst Arnold impressions and go to town! This is Old Skool BWB at its finest!

The WWE Network: A Solid B+

Last week, to much fanfare, the WWE Network launched. After years of speculation and discussion and negotiation, WWE chose to, instead of going through cable providers, offer a paired streaming online service with an on-demand library of content from their archives. It was widely hailed as a good move for everyone involved, they signed on with the MLB Network for streaming backbone, and all seemed to be well.

After a week of having it, and being able to play with it for a few days after the bandwidth and login issues got settled, it's good to know that the network is pretty much awesome, even if it has room for improvement.

FPcast! The Fruitless Pursuits Podcast for March 3rd 2014! Character Appropriate Cosplay!

This week we ask the pertinent question, "Which characters could YOU conceivably cosplay as?" Are you a Spider-Man or a Spider-Ham? We list who we think we could get away with! Plus, we talk about Tom Hiddleston in Shakespeare's Coriolanus, and come up with a foolproof plan to lay the foundations for Ghostbusters III. Listen to this nonsense!

Thursday Threesome: Three Shows I'm Watching Instead of Doing NaNoWriMo Rewrites

Among the excuses I've given for not doing rewrites on my NaNoWriMo project include not feeling so hot, the baby, work, the amount of books I have to read, the amount of books I want to read, depression, anger, pure joy, and the fact that we don't currently own a cat.

The real answer is less exciting: there's just a lot of good television distracting me lately. Yeah, True Detective is ruining my life, but that's not really the full issue. Truly, I've discovered two new shows, and I've had a favorite return, that has essentially changed my viewing landscape in the short term and is distracting me from more useful endeavors. So, well, let's ruin your free time, too.

The Book Was Better Episode 76: Terminator 2! (with guest host Lizzy Unpronounceable!)

This week we finely-tuned future people travel back to the turbulent nineties where we set our sights on the novelization of robo-Arnie blockbuster Terminator 2! Joining me through time is adorable guest host Lizzy Unpronounceable who you may remember helped me battle the sickening forces of Shaun Hutson's explicit sex-fuelled adaption of the original Terminator. Now, this book isn't quite so sexy... and yet we still found it to be relatively sexy. Hasta la vista! Whatever that means!
