Books: Check Out Brandon Bird's Astonishing World of Art!

You know and love Brandon Bird, right? The pop artist who gave us such enduring classics as Killing Machine featuring Bea Arthur wrestling some raptors, and the heartbreaking No One Wants to Play Sega with Harrison Ford? Well now he has a new book, an activity book of sorts that gives you plenty of projects for those rainy days indoors. It's called Brandon Bird's Astonishing World of Art, and while I don't have a copy yet, I am absolutely mesmerised by this brilliant trailer that shows it off.

Please trust me when I say you should watch this one. It's hilarious!

Now I need to find this thing!

Review: Pacific Rim: Man, Machines and Monsters from Titan Books!

I may have struggled with the human characters (and their terrible fake Australian accents) but I cannot fault the brilliantly audacious and over-the-top production design of Pacific Rim. We can debate character development and dialogue until our faces explode, but the simple fact is, if you don’t enjoy monsters fighting robots then you are dead inside. Nothing is quite so outlandish and epic as Del Toro’s loving tribute to the kaiju battles of old and, in terms of sheer wonder and excitement, Pacific Rim had me hooked.

Since seeing the film I have been very eager to get a closer, more detailed look at the cast of robots and kaiju that quickly flashed across the screen. And I always enjoy movie art books, so I was excited to learn that our good friends at Titan Books were the ones producing Pacific Rim: Man, Machines and Monsters by David S. Cohen.

They were kind enough to send me a copy and I’ll tell you everything you need to know about Gipsy Danger, Striker Eureka and all the squishy monsters... after the jump!

Interview Time with Andy Goergen of Nintendo World Report and 8-Bit Acrylic!

Andy Goergen is involved with a few different video game things you might not be familiar with, but should be. A friend of mine for a number of years now, he was gracious enough to take some time to talk about what's going on with Nintendo, video games in general, and other endeavors. He has a interesting perspective on Nintendo that I hadn't considered, and it's a good reminder that I have to reclaim a high score in a game we both play...

Andy can be found at Nintendo World Report (Twitter and Facebook) and 8 Bit Acrylic (Etsy and Facebook).

Capey's Comic Convention Commission Etiquette

It’s 9am and freezing cold out the front of some convention centre. Geeks of all shapes and sizes are queued up, ready to pounce. For some it will be a mad dash to get a chance for a photo with their favourite celebrity, for others it’s to get that first bargain or rarity before someone else snaps it up. For me, it’s a sprint to artist’s alley to meet my artistic heroes of the comic world.

The comic penciler is part artist, part cinematographer, director, set designer and choreographer. In the film industry this would be the job of many talented people. In comics, it’s one supremely talented person. Also, unlike those other professions, you can get an original piece of their work, created just for you.  You can’t go and get yourself an original piece from legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins but you can have an original piece by the immortal George Perez on your wall. It’s really a unique thing in pop culture.

Now I’ve gotten good handful of pieces done and often get questions from people on the cost, how to go about it and so forth. I have commissions from Nicola Scott, Francis Manapul, David Yardin, Mark Brooks and Matthew Clark among others on my wall. I figured with Supanova coming up this week in Perth, Oz Comic-Con in Melbourne the week after and SDCC fast approaching, why not delve into it for you lovely readers.

Book Review: The Art of Iron Man 3!

I goddamn love movie art books. At last year's Free Comic Book Day I grabbed and reviewed The Art of The Avengers and this year I followed the proud why-not-call-it-a-tradition by purchasing the handsomely heavy Art of Iron Man 3.

Marvel has shown a knack for producing both beautiful and comprehensive art books that document the production of their films, and Iron Man 3 is no exception. In fact, I would argue that this particular tome is even more essential than its predecessors as it details some incredible and intricate design that barely flash across the screen. Have you ever wanted to see all 42 Iron Man armours, presented clearly, in order, with all of their code names? I certainly did and, as far as I know, this book is the first resource to do that.

Plus there's plenty of more. I'm going to barrage you with info and opinions... after the jump!

Book Review: The Art of Sucker Punch!

I’ve declared my love for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch plenty of times in the past. It’s a wildly divisive film, but it does have its fans, who are slowly growing in number as more people discover it. I always liken it in my mind to Disney’s Fantasia, i.e. an experimental, visually striking series of loosely connected music videos that not everybody wants to sit through. But if you can find a way to approach it then there’s plenty to appreciate. You simply have to be willing to submit to the journey.

We can probably at least agree that the design is a driving force behind the film so I was absolutely thrilled when our dear friends at Titan Books sent me a glorious hardback copy of The Art of Sucker Punch. I adore film art books in general, and this is a perfect film to study more closely and maybe we can even learn something along the way.

So, if you’re a fan, help me unravel Sucker Punch... after the jump!

David Rapoza's TMNT Art Is Totally Rad!

While everyone is gushing over new glossy and colorful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles merchandise, there is something dark and dirty lurking underground that blows away all of the competition.

Artist David Rapoza created these HIGHLY detailed, HIGHLY stylized fan-made Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle portraits. And he didn't just stop at the main dudes. Or even at April O' Neil and Casey Jones. There is a freakin' Wingnut and Screwloose portrait. Also, Baxter Stockman! Everyone you would expect and a few more.

The only exception is that my man Kraang is sadly MIA. If you are reading this David... we need Kraang!

The above image is just a taste of it. These were made to view at hi-res. Click through the jump for a handful of my favorites, and visit http://davidrapozaart.deviantart.com/gallery/30154029 for all 15 portraits and much more.

Scott Pilgrim's Bryan Lee O'Malley Does Battle Royale!

Aint It Cool News have shown off an awesome new poster than Mondo has created for the Japanese kids-murdering-kids-on-an-island cult classic, Battle Royale. And if you haven't yet seen that magnificent, visceral film then rush out and see it - Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins certainly did!

But the best part is that Mondo artist Kevin Tong has teamed up with Bryan Lee O'Malley. (Not to be confused with Bruce Lee O'Malley who is a famous kung-fu leprechaun). O'Malley is the writer/artist of Scott Pilgrim, one of my favourite comic series EVER, so to see his style interpreted here is appropriately wonderful. Check it out...

I'm not sure if this is for sale anywhere, but Mondo posters sell out fast and command high prices so you'd have to be super quick. We love you, Bryan Lee! Looking forward to your next book!

Iron Man 3 Poster Turns Everything Upside Down!

Tony Stark is going to get the shit knocked out of him. The last thing you want to do is piss off a Mandarin - they have evil moustaches and magic rings - but it looked like Tony has done just that and now it’s time to pay the price. Everything we’ve seen so far from Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 seems to be about stripping Tony of everything he has and dumping him in the middle of nowhere. This freshly revealed poster definitely reinforces that.

The world is TOPSY TURVY! Everything you think you know has been turned upside down!

Actually Marvel President Kevin Feige was recently quoted as saying, “Much of the movie is Tony in the middle of the country without his tools”. What?! That’s a weird choice. That would be like a Batman movie where Batman spent most of it stripped of his Batman costume while stuck in a hole on the other side of the world. And that would never happen, right? Guess we’ll find out soon!

The Art of Wayne Dorrington: Star Wars Iconoscopes / Pepetz / Tabletop and Classic Book Covers

In the age of Twitter, things go by real fast. So fast that if you blink, you'll miss a few hundred carefully crafted 140 character messages (including the link to this article). But thankfully I paused today to click on a link to Wil Wheaton as Jesus in a Last Supper-themed piece of high-quality fan-art.

Just a small taste. Check out the full image here.
The fan happened to be the wonderful artist Wayne Dorrington, best known for his Star Wars Iconoscopes, huge silhouette-styled images showing the events of Episodes 4-6. His style is generally very minimalistic and silhouette heavy, but then again his Princess Leia Pepetz papercraft is quite different, and very cool. So cool that I had to print and make my own. You can too, for free!

Print your own at http://pepetz.com/season2/2012/10/15/wayne-dorrington/
I felt that I HAD to share his art, just incase you haven't seen it. Click through the jump for some of his his Books By Their Covers Series (Oh man, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!), and a massive Star Wars: A New Hope Iconoscope.

Book Review: Tarzan the Centennial Celebration!

James Bond. Batman. They’re both pretty awesome. But what about some love for king jungle-rumbler Tarzan? The guy is now officially 100 years old and he was RAISED BY APES! How awesome is that?! I love these inspirational tales of orphans done good.

To celebrate, our friends at Titan Books have released a fittingly MAMMOTH book, Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration, that covers all of Tarzan’s book, comic, film, TV and merchandise appearances over the last 100 years. I personally love it because it is filled with beautifully epic paintings of Tarzan absolutely belting the crap out of all kind of animals. And dinosaurs! Beat your chest in celebration!

Take that, stupid lion!

Gallery 1988: Old School Video Game Art Show - Level 2

More awesome video game art from Gallery 1988!

Sorry about the late notice (the exhibit ended last night), but I just found out about their second Old School video game art show. It's not like I could have attended, being on the opposite coast. But, there is a good side to living across the country (and across the world for some of you)... you can sit at home, look at the artwork online, and then purchase originals and prints of the artwork after the exhibit ends. And let's face it, if you're playing these video games enough to buy the artwork based on them, leaving the house isn't really your "thing". It's not mine either.

This collection was heavy on the Mario, followed by Zelda and Punch Out. There were a few more obscure references in there, but this collection didn't stray from the hits. The AMAZING Arkanoid illustration may have been the least popular game in the batch, and the Street Fighter 2 car was a great reference.

Check out a few of the best pieces from Gallery 1988's Old School Video Game Art Show - Level 2 after the jump. For more images or to purchase the artwork, visit http://nineteeneightyeight.com/collections/old-school-video-games-level-2

Watch Steff Bomb on TLC's Craft Wars Tonight!

As you probably know, we're big fans of Steff Bomb's amazing plush creations. But here's something you may not know...

Steff Bomb will be crafting in every one of our homes TONIGHT!

Well, kind of. She's one of three crafters battling for $10,000 of Tori Spelling's hard earned money on TLC's Craft Wars. Tonight's episode is Thanksgiving themed, which immediately makes me want to see her design a plush Cornucopia. And we all know that would pretty much guarantee the $10,000 prize.

Will there be any Star Wars references? Will there be any mentions of her Weezer Wonder Woman tattoo? Will she destroy the competition?

Tune in at 11pm EST.

Opening Tonight: Crazy 4 Cult New York!

Gallery 1988's ongoing Crazy 4 Cult art show has finally made it's way to the east coast with tonight's New York gallery opening. The series focuses on classic cult movies (and by 'cult' they mean 'awesome') such as Donnie Darko and The Big Lebowski. This time around we're seeing more of the older classics like Back to the Future, This Is Spinal Tap, and The Warriors. Not a single complaint from me on the film choices. Check out the teaser poster and decide for yourself.

Crazy 4 Cult New York opens tonight and runs until Sept 1st.

Gallery1988 NYC Pop-up Store
64 Gansevoort St., NY, NY 10014

Click through the jump for a preview of the artwork (over 200 artists!), including a prized plush hoverboard from our good friend Steff Bomb.

Let's Relax and be Cultured for a Minute and Enjoy a Woodcut of Colonel Sanders.

It's not always news break-neck news about blockbusting Batmen and Spidermangs. Sometimes it's nice to sit back, be civilised and enjoy some good-old fashioned art. Sometimes it's all about a wood-cut of a fast food icon.

We were contacted by Loren, a wood-cut artist in Hollywood who must have stumbled across my thoughtful, incredibly factual reminisce on the late, great Colonel Sanders as part of our hard-hitting Movember coverage and assumed I was a fan of the San-Man. Loren... You assumed right! Here's the great man himself, via a carved piece of wood!

You'll find a far more factually accurate history of the man at Loren's blog Woodcutting Fool beginning with these immortal words:
"Though his karma is stained with the blood of generations of innocent poultry, Colonel Harland Sanders is an American legend. He may look like a beady-eyed, mint-julep swilling racist, but his story is quite inspirational."
You'll also find woodcuts of other legends like David Lynch, Gary Busey, and Steve Buscemi.

Thank you, Loren! Now we are cultured!

There's Always Money In The Banana Stand - Arrested Development Art Show at Gallery1988!

Continuing in their wonderful pop-culture art exhibits, Gallery1988's newest exhibit is one that hits close to home. Or at least, close to the model home.

If you were one of the few that watched Arrested Development during it's short 3 season run, one of the many who discovered the show was after it was prematurely cancelled, or you know first hand what it's like to have a dysfunctional family... you will love this exhibit.

The full exhibit launches on Friday June 29th, and in true Gallery1988 form, you will be able to purchase the originals online afterwards at http://nineteeneightyeight.com/

For now we have a preview of 8 awesome images from the exhibit. Just click through the jump to see them. Come on!

Review: The Art of The Avengers!

If you're still on an Avengers high and you're ravenously searching for more tie-ins to consume then you could do a lot worse than Marvel Publishing's The Art of The Avengers, written by the surreal Jason Surrell and designed by the powerful Jeff Powell. And it's a weighty 270 page hard cover, packaged in its own mighty box/sleeve, so it's going to keep you occupied for a while.

I love art books and I love behind-the-scenes material. I find buying art books such a no-brainer, in fact I often have to fight the urge to buy two copies so that I can pull one apart to frame my favourite pages. If I ever have to move house and can't face lugging a billion books again I might even have to do just that.

So how does this one stack up? Join me after the jump and we'll find out!

Review: ThreeA Adventure Kartel: Penumbra and Shadow2.

I recently spoke of how enchanted and intrigued I was by artist Ashley Wood's brilliantly designed work for his company ThreeA Toys, and now I've finally got my hands on some! At the end of last week I received two of his 12 inch Adventure Kartel figures, namely Penumbra and Shadow 2.

If you'd like to see two of the most beautifully designed and detailed figures (with the craziest clothing you've ever seen) then I implore ye to join me... after the jump! POW!
