Retro Review: Nintendo Game Pack Trading Cards!

This past weekend we ventured to a vintage market where, amongst dusty LP’s, burlesque prints, and fancy hats, I managed to find some sealed packs of classic Nintendo Game Pack trading cards for a mere two dollars a (waxy) pack. I didn’t know what was lurking inside - I didn’t even need to know - all I knew is that I needed them and that I’d force you to hear all about them. Even though, let’s be honest, Nintendo is notoriously sissy. DON’T HIT ME! (Or should that be “ineffectually slap” me?).

Join me after the jump and we will crack these cards open and ROFL at the gloriously retro art and fun to be had inside. Or should I have spent that $4 on a coffee? Let’s find out!

Etsy round up: The Legend of Zelda!

Now before all else, I need to warn you that Zelda is not a franchise that I'm massively familiar with. Beyond the general cultural and internet memes that I've learned over time. But it is one that people go insane for, and so I had high expectations for this particular round up. Ready your shopping lists! As always, clicking on the image will take you on a magical journey into Etsyland.

Sponsor News: Let's Discuss This Week's Toy and Collectibles Highlights!

Our friends at Big Bad Toy Store have released a slew of new pre-orders and I am going to share and comment on everything that caught my seasoned eye as a professional Collectorian. ( I have a degree in the Acquiring and Displaying of Awesome Unessentials). Like this spoilerish pair of figures from Sir Ridley Scott's stomach-splitting Prometheus:

What!? I always assumed they were called Space Jockeys because they raced horses, wore jockey shorts, and constantly jockeyed for our attention!

This is actually a set of two separate figures as opposed to an elaborate piece of armour. Made by NECA, both are around 8.5 inches tall and BBTS has them listed right here for $34.99. Also interesting to note that this pair of Engineers are identified as "Series 01" so maybe we'll get a fass-bending David the Uneasily Polite Android later on.

To see what else caught my keen Collectorian eye... join me after the jump!

Hockey Geekery

All of us here at Fruitless Pursuits love geeking out over nerdy stuff, but some of us also love geeking out over the traditionally less nerdy area of sports. A guy who shares our geek sports love is Dave from Dave's Geeky Hockey. What started as a few 'Hey wouldn't this be cool...' ideas has escalated into teaming up with custom jersey company Rinkgear to get some of these designs off the computer screen and onto the backs of fans. I myself have this bad boy on the way, and fittingly it should arrive just in time for ACTUAL winter:

Jump below the cut for a look at a few more of Dave's kickass designs.

Advanced Zelda gaming

Man this game seems hard! I don't know if I'm fit or agile or Stephen Chow enough to play Skyward Sword

WTF is WedNESday?

WedNESday is another excuse to turn a day of the week into something much bigger than that. It's a day of the week with a theme!  Just like Metal Mondays and Thank Gif It's Friday, you'll see NES related posts in-between our usual BS related posts.

The theme of WedNESday is open to interpretation and does not have any hard rules. If it's about Nintendo, it's all good! If it's about other retro gaming.. good too! How about game inspired art? Sounds awesome! 8-bit music? Yeah! Video game fan fiction? I hope!

To kick things off, here is the wonderful trailer for The Legend Of Zelda Movie (1987) that made it's way around most of the internet a few months ago. Stick around until the end for (or click here to download) an awesome 8-Bit version of New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle recorded by our good friend Chipocrite.

Mega Buzz Lightyear and more Nerd Shenanigans by Dan Hipp!

Someone thankfully retweeted Dan Hipp's awesome mega Buzz Lightyear illustration a few days ago, and I immediately had to check out his website. Maybe the comic peeps here already know about him, but the last comic I bought for myself was Batman: A Death In The Family like 20 years ago.. so I was really excited to see his style and pop culture goodies.

Here's a selection of AWESOME illustrations that I found on his website, including Ackbar, bounty hunters, turtles, pizza, zombies and more.
