Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar 2013 Day 18: Great Minds Ride a Bike.

It's Day 18 of the roller coaster ride that is the Lego Star Wars advent calendar. Sometimes we're sneaking a kiss from Princess Leia but more often than not we're being strangled by a dianoga in a pit of shit. Will today gives us New Hope? Or will it be another Attack of the blocky brown Clones?

Let's tear open Door Number 18 to see what we got...

And... it's... a...

BIKER SCOUT!

Okay! That's a WIN! I don't know what it is about these guy's but since Return of the Jedi's release I have been mesmerized by them. It's a very cool design and one of my absolute favourite troop builders. They are also something that I instinctively associate with Christmas. I recall this guy being pretty high on my Christmas list at his time of release and I remember watching news footage of some kid on TV at a local shopping mall, sitting on Santa's knee and being asked what he wanted for Christmas. And he whispers, "A biker scout" and I was like, "OH HOLY SHIT THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!" And I got one too! I wonder if that kid did? Maybe I got his? Sucks to be that kid.

The helmet is removable showing a Jango Fett-esque face underneath. It's a nice touch but I kind of wish they didn't do that. I was far happier as kid to have the mystery of not knowing who or what any of these guys were like under their armour. It's not that I thought them to be robots or aliens or anything, but it's nice to feel that they could be just about anyone. Like maybe you take off his helmet and he has red curly hair and a twirly moustache. To say, "Nope. They all look like this guy" feels unimaginative and limiting to me. It's Lego though so I guess I can pop off his head and put on a better one. Maybe Doctor Doom. Thank you, Lego! If you give him a bike tomorrow then I will love you forever, but somehow I don't think that's going to happen.

And for those keeping score, each day I pit this calendar against the Jurassic Park Playmobil one. And it's a clear win for Lego today who has earned their point!

  1. I know it doesn't matter for the minifig, but by the time of the Scout Troopers they were mostly regular soldiers as opposed to clones, so the scout troopers are still just as mysterious. If that helps your Scout Trooper love any.
