Up Close And Personal With The New Lego Star Wars Minifigs

I've been itching for some new Lego sets lately, and I've been scouring the toy aisles at Target at least a few times a week. I picked up 3/4 of the Heroica sets a few months back, and a ton of minifig Series 3 and 4 before that, but I haven't gotten any solid sets in a while. I think the main reason is that I really just want the minifigs.

Tonight we headed back to target and a few new sets immediately caught my eye. First I saw a pretty large Cars set, which I think I kind-of like. I might buy the entry level $10 set just to have it in my collection. But then I noticed City sets that I don't remember seeing. After that, I turned and realized the Star Wars section was almost all new sets. Here is a rundown (and lots of images) of the new, newly re-made, or new-ish Star Wars minifigs.

The Phantom Menace
Most of the newer sets are based on The Phantom Menace. I know a lot of people hate on the film, but I love a lot of the design of E1. The familiar jedi robes, everything about Padme/Amidala, Watto and some of the podracers, and I know I'm going to hear it for this... the Gungans. I really like the Gungan design. The Lego versions look really good this time around. Much improved from the first release. Same with Watto, and even Sebulba. Adding some color added a ton of life to these guys.

I'm not too fond of the new Darth Maul. I like the idea of the extra head sculpting, but it looks too much like a crown on top. And his eyes feel a little close together. They don't look any closer than the other characters, so maybe it's the crown that's throwing them off.

Clone Wars
There were some Clone Wars style sets as well. These may not be brand new(??) but I don't know how I feel about the alternate art style as a minifig. I love it in the show, and even in the 3 3/4" figures, but these are weird to me. And it messes with my dream of a unified lego minifig universe (but not nearly as much as the old yellow head Star Wars ones do).

The three things I don't like about these is:

1. Obi-Wan is very pasty. His flesh is a terrible contrast to his reddish hair.
2. I think the figures are looking upwards? It looks like they are in the front row of a movie theater.
3. Savage Oppress has the same issue as Darth Maul.

Otherwise, Saesee Tiin looks great.

Original Trilogy
New Ewoks, and a Blast Shield Luke. Amazing. I can't believe I did not buy the Logray set.

Attack of the Clones
I'm not sure if these ones are new, but I want the Ki-Adi-Mundi.

Not Star Wars, But Really Awesome
These are in one of the large Pirates of the Caribbean sets. I think it was the pirate ship, and I need them now.

So after taking all of these pictures, I was pretty overwhelmed and couldn't make up my mind. So I bought a $4.99 Alien Conquest to get inspired for our Lego contest next week. Don't forget! Luke and I are battling it out to create the best design based on a Non-Star Wars space movie. The details are here: http://www.fruitlesspursuits.com/2011/08/lego-builders-battle-to-death.html

  1. I've been getting the new sets if you want me to review.

I've got Podracers with Watto, Sebulba, Wald, Anakin and Obi Wan

Republic Frigate with Quinlan Vos, Eeth Koth, Yoda and clones.

Sith Speeder with Assajj, Savage and Anakin

And the Bounty Hunter ship with Aurra Sing, Embo, and Sugi(?).

They are all really nicely done. I want that Logray super bad but I don't need a Lego tree :(

I am going to use these pieces for our Lego battle. I have my non-star wars movie ship all picked out!

  2. I would love to see a review.

I feel the same way about the $25 Lego tree. I would always welcome another Scout Trooper to my collection though.

As for the battle.. I have weird Lego issues and I can't take apart my sets to build custom creations. I have to use the good old crusty bulk pieces from my garage. Prepare to see some faded and discolored pieces that you won't find anywhere else.

  3. Yeah I want to cannibalize my Frigate which I only built for the first time early this week and it kind of pains me.

  4. I should have mentioned this above... but if they can make those unique mermaid bottoms, they sure could make a better set of women's dress legs.

Yeah... I'm still ranting about this.

  5. Wait, you DIDN'T buy the ewok set?!? What the fuck is wrong with you?!?

Also, those are some pretty hairy mermaids.

  6. I couldn't decide! I had a birthday gift card and it was stressing me out big time. Gift cards seem to do that to me.

And it was like Christmas at Target last night. The shelves were stacked with all new items.
